Master in Economics

PhD Program at the Center for Doctoral Studies in Economics (CDSE)

General Information

The Master program offers direct access to the PhD program of the Department of Economics. After the first semester, particularly successful students can directly enrol in the Master of Economic Research, a specialized and concentrated study program that leads directly to acceptance into the department's doctoral program, if successfully completed. This study program lasts additional three semesters (four semesters in total) and includes the writing of a research thesis that develops first ideas for a doctoral dissertation. Students who complete this program successfully and have the support of a faculty member willing to supervise the student's doctoral thesis are then accepted into the Center for Doctoral Studies in Economics, where they work on their doctoral dissertation under the supervision of two to three professors from the Mannheim faculty or one of its international partner faculties.

The Center for Doctoral Studies in Economics is part of the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences of the University of Mannheim. It is one of only two graduate schools in Economics in Germany to have been distinguished by the "Initiative of Excellence" of the German government and is highly reputed internationally.
